What Makes Us Special

Utterback has strong programs in visual and performing arts. Our 400 seat theater, band and orchestra rooms, dance studios, media center and art rooms support the school’s programs in dance, music, and visual arts.

Our curriculum also emphasizes traditional academic subjects, using project-based learning techniques to infuse reading, math and science into an arts education. We are an Innovation Zone school, which means we're part of a district program designed to transform schools to become models for education locally and in the state. The program is a partnership with the University of Virginia schools of leadership and education and provides intensive training to teachers and administrators.

Welcome Letter

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to school year 2018-2019 at Utterback Middle School!  We are excited for a wonderful school year and we have many positive programs, classes and initiatives to share with you.  This year we are offering a full compliment of classes staffed by a wonderful group of highly-qualified teachers.  We have strong core classes as well as a large amount of electives including; AVID, art, technology, physical education, choir, piano, band and orchestra.  We welcome our new certified teachers to our staff this year and they are working with our returning faculty to bring quality instruction to all of our students.  We are in our fourth year building an AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) here at Utterback.  AVID is a program designed to help close the achievement gap and empower students within their own educational process so they will be successful in college and beyond.  We are thrilled to have AVID strategies school wide at Utterback!

Also in our fourth year, is our 21st Century Learning Grant that allows us to run many intervention and enrichment classes after school.  Stay tuned for information about our 21st Century Program that will begin in September.  We have Girls’ Volleyball and Boys’ Basketball getting ready to have tryouts for our first season.  All interested student-athletes must complete an athletic packet, have a current physical, and pay their participation fee in order to be eligible for tryouts.

This year is our first year with students being required to wear uniforms.  The expectations are:  Khaki uniform pants, shorts, capris, skirts, skorts, dresses with sleeves or over a collared shirt, or jumpers.  Pants, shorts, and capris must have a belt.  Shirts must have a collar and sleeves, either polo or button down.  Appropriate colors are  royal blue, black, white, and grey.  Shirts must be tucked in at all times. Shoes must be closed toe; either tennis, athletic or leather.  Please no jeans, basketball pants/shorts, gym pants/shorts, or sweat pants. Leggings and tights can only be worn under a skirt or dress and must be khaki colored.

Please look through the rest of our website for even more about Utterback and our amazing start to the year.  We look forward to partnering with you as we build academic and social success for our students.
